About the Juggernaut

THE JUGGERNAUT is an all Class A discrete, tranformer coupled 500 series preamp by APA, designed by Tim Farrant and Nathan Eldred.

The Juggernaut features custom wound iron and nickel input transformers (switchable via push button), and comes standard with an iron core custom output transformer (optional custom nickel output is also available). When switching between input transformers the automute function engages to prevent loud pops or damage to speakers. Manual mute is also selectable. Pushbutton LEDs light up when selected. The Juggernaut is electronically discrete and fully class A; no opamps, no chips. Fully API (tm) comptible.

The Juggernaut was designed to be the ideal multi-tasker in the studio for any application. It is the first 500 series preamp that can provide a staggering range of tonal choices and control, through the use of switchable input transformers, widest choice of selectable impedance settings, onboard instrument DI, high-quality detented gain and impedance knobs for repeatability and stereo matching between multiple Juggernauts, and much more. The incredible amount of features packed into a single 500 series slot is unprecedented.

Some other unique features include "Boost" and "+THD". Boost control button lowers or raises the sensitivity of the INPUT to avoid the typical negative -20dB pad found on many preamps which effects the tone. The +THD button is -10dB OUTPUT pad which will allows slight saturation of the transformer.

The Juggernaut has a wide selection of impedance settings ranging from 300 to 10,000 ohms this feature acts like a "tone control" knob; going beyond the traditional idea of mic impedance matching with microphones. The lower settings allow for low end emphasis in the source, while the higher settings allow for a distinctly open and extended full range frequency response. The Juggernaut provides the utmost flexibility and freedom of choice. *(The Nickel Output is available seperately as an added option and must be swapped by the user. The Juggernaut ships with a custom Iron core output transformer as standard.)
"tones ranging from sweet purity to velvety saturation. Thoughtful features and ergonomics make the Juggernaut a joy to use. Any studio would benefit from having a Juggernaut or two, but the preamp's sonic versatility makes it a serious contender for anyone looking for one preamp that does it all... there's no doubt this is one great product." - Michael Cooper

American Classic

- Set your Input transformer selection to Iron and Nickel output (Nickel output is an extra option and must be manually changed on the 500 series), Set the impedance low, between 300 and 1200 ohms. The Iron transformer will give you more mid emphasized tones. For API(tm) style: set to Iron in, Iron out, set impedance between 300-600 range, start at 300 and go up to 600 if needed, and use +THD make sure to increase gain about 8 clicks to compensate for padding. This sound is pretty well known. For Quad 8 Style: Iron in, Nickel Out (Nickel output is an extra option and must be manually changed on the 500 series), Impendance 3000+ ohms, (no +THD).

British Vintage

- Set your Input transformer selection to Iron, and Iron core output. For 1272-ish style: Use +THD and set to 300 impedance. Reset your gain to be at least 8 clicks higher to compensate for the +THD padding. (Juggernaut Twin comes with FAT button which was designed to give more low end that you would find on the 1272 type pres) For 1073 style: Use +THD, set the impedance between 3000 and 4000 ohms. Reset your gain to be at least 8 clicks higher to compensate for the +THD padding. For Helios style: Nickel in, Iron Out, Impendance 4000-6000, +THD (always increase gain 8-10 clicks when using +THD).

Modern

- Set your Input transformer selection to Nickel and Nickel output (Nickel output is an extra option and must be manually changed on the 500 series). Set the impedance between 4000 and 10,000 ohms. Nickel has more top and bottom frequencies, lots of detail. There is a wide range of preamps being manufactured today, but of them, the ones that do use Class A discrete circuits that are similar to what you get when using a Juggernaut Twin, two come to mind, those being the John Hardy and Crane Song pres. For Modern Clean style: Nickel in, Nickel out, Impendance 2000-4000 ohms, no +THD.

Everywhere in between

- with the Juggernaut preamp you have the freedom and flexibility of choice. There are actually 328 possible settings when you use the 4 x possible transformers combinations, 41 impedance settings, +THD. There is nothing else like the Juggernaut, you can create new combinations using all these settings. These are just a few suggestions to get you started. It's fun to come up with new sounds. Try some unique settings using a hybrid of old and new sounds. Also check out the fully expanded rack version - The Juggernaut Twin, which offers a FAT button and a total of 656 setting permutations, and comes with switchable INPUT AND OUTPUT transformers via PUSHBUTTON on the front panel, and more!
