THE FIRST PRODUCT OF ITS KIND, the award winning Equi=Tech rack mounted balanced AC power system, has garnered a reputation among professionals for ruggedness and dependability and of course as a highly effective means of reducing background noise. Typically audio and video hum is greatly reduced or eliminated completely, digital jitter is cut in half and there will be a significantly wider dynamic range. Eight sizes of rack mountable 120-volt balanced power systems are offered with an output capacity range of 1000 to 10,000 VA (8.3 - 83 Amps continuous duty.)

At the heart of each system is a highly efficient, precision wound toroid isolation transformer with a patented winding design that makes Equi=Tech's systems the most accurately balanced in the world. Besides voltage, the impedance across the transformer's output is also precisely balanced which provides the broadest band noise cancellation possible -- the absolute state-of-the-art. Equi=Tech transformers are precision wound just for today's most sensitive digital electronics. Standard rack system transformers are equipped with Faraday shielding for superior isolation and over 80dB of common mode noise attenuation. The Super Isolators and the Model Q versions provide over 100dB of common mode noise attenuation. All of the rack system transformers have a very low magnetic stray field design and incorporate additional magnetic shielding. This feature makes Equi=Tech rack systems safe for use near sensitive tape machines in racks.

The Many Advantages of Equi=Tech Rack Systems

  • Superior Construction -- The quality in construction and design separates Equi=Tech rack systems from all others. Every system employs only passive components guaranteeing long life, ruggedness and dependability. High temperature copper wire and high pressure shrink-wrapped terminals are protected from corrosion and provide 10 times the contact surface area of other plug-in type terminals. The units are designed to run cool when fully loaded -- up to 25 degrees C. cooler than other high power equipment. And, unlike similar products, they won't fail even under momentarily high or low voltage conditions.
  • Advanced "Silent Source Technology"™ -- As the "Pioneer of Balanced Power", we have over twelve years of experience invested in researching and developing balanced power products. They are absolutely the quietest of all AC power products in every way immaginable. They are also the most accurate and effective balanced power systems in the world. We are constantly striving to build a more effective product. We have developed many new manufacturing procedures and designs, constantly breaking new ground in an effort to improve our systems. The payoff is in providing our customers with the most rugged, dependable and effective power products that money can buy. Equi=Tech Balanced Power Systems set the standard of excellence for all others to follow. Silent Source Technology™, exclusively from Equi=Tech, encompasses numerous power technologies and is the result of years of research and improvements in our products. There are simply none better.
  • Many Uses -- Rack systems can be installed in amp racks, effects racks and in a variety of other locations including mixing rooms, 24-track tape transport racks with or without Dolby™, hard disk recording systems, effects racks, instrument racks, front of house consoles, ADAT™ project studios, editing suites, digital workstations, portable PA systems, sound trucks, broadcast booths, sound sweetening rooms, ENG, microwave links, recording trucks, video racks, TV remotes, foley rooms, stage sound carts, uplink remotes, etc. Larger rack systems are ideal for power hungry automation power supplies used with larger consoles. They can also be used to power large PA systems or entire sound, video or broadcast production trucks. Two or more systems can be operated in parallel for any application with no loss in effectiveness.
  • Convenient Size -- The Models 2R (2000VA) and smaller require only 2 rack spaces (3 1/2") to install. Often space is at a premium and their compact size wastes no precious space in an equipment rack. Manufactured with uncompromising quality, they deliver the same amount of power as much bulkier similar products do, and despite their size, they stay cool even when run under a full load. Larger rack systems also deliver a lot of power for their size. The 3 rack unit version can deliver 5 kVA. The largest rack system is only 7" (4 ru) high but it provides up to a 10 kVA output (5 20-amp circuits.)
  • Tested Safe -- Only Equi=Tech rack systems are tested and certified to meet the highest ANSI/UL standard (Std. #1012) for AC power distribution equipment. No one else manufactures balanced AC equipment that meets this standard. Equi=Tech systems have been tested and certified to be dependable and safe in almost every situation.
  • Easy to Install -- Rack systems install in minutes. After the rack system is mounted in the rack, just unplug all of the plug strips and equipment from the AC wall outlets and plug them into the outlets on the rear panel of the Equi=Tech.

Option Descriptions

  • SI -- Super-isolator option. Transformers are wound with exceptionally low capacitance and two electrostatic shields providing superior isolation (>100dB CMR) from high frequency interference in locations where noise from switching power supplies, SCR controllers and commercial lighting equipment can cause digital timing errors affecting data integrity.
  • Q -- The "Q" option -- offered with Models ET3R and smaller. Like the Super-isolator transformers, Q transformers are wound with exceptionally low capacitance and two electrostatic shields providing superior isolation (>100dB CMR) from high frequency interference. But these transformers are very large, much larger than standard sized toroids. Typically, they run cold at full load capacity. A proprietary winding design drastically reduces high inrush current and also provides for distortion-free performance. These transformers remain acoustically quiet even in locations where there is a lot of local current distortion and very poor power quality. They are particularly helpful where power hungry amplifiers may be choked by high peak current demands on a smaller sized power transformer. Click here for more details about "Q" transformers.
  • E -- Export models are designed to run electronic equipment requiring 230-volt 50Hz power from a 230-volt 50Hz source. Available with models ET3R and smaller. A nominal 230-volt supply is isolated and balanced at the outputs in a similar fashion as U.S. systems that isolate and balance U.S. power. May also be used in the U.S. for equipment that requires 230-volt power. Since the output voltage is about twice that of U.S. models, the current output rating is 1/2 that of the U.S. version -- however, the power rating is identical.
  • EA -- Export-American option. Provides balanced power for touring the world with U.S. equipment. These systems utilize a 50Hz step-down transformer that converts 230-volts to 117-volts (+/- 3%) balanced for use with U.S. equipment in Europe and other areas of the world where AC supply is nominally 230-volts 50Hz. In areas such as the Caribbean, Mexico and the Orient where 200V-220V is common, with an additional SW Option (below) the systems can be switched to compensate for the lower voltage. They may also be used in the US when a 208- or 240-volt 60Hz power source is provided.
  • F -- EMI/RFI filter option. Filters are applied to the balanced output. Where a balanced power system's common mode noise rejection ends, EMI/RFI filtering begins. Some equipment power supplies are not very well balanced so some high frequency AC interference differs from typical power harmonics making these balanced multi-stage line filters a fine compliment to a balanced power system. Sensitive digital electronics in a system may require additional line filtering for best performance. Switching digital power supply noise is attenuated on the line and kept isolated from outlets that power other sensitive electronics. These multi-stage line filters reduce line noise -30dB from 100kHz to 1gHz. Note: When specifying multiple filters, use F2, F3, etc. to indicate the number of filters required. Consult factory for custom filtering configurations.
  • M -- Front panel voltmeter option. A true RMS voltmeter with an accuracy of (+/-) .5% that brightly reads out the exact voltage on the power line with a simple and clear 3-digit LED display. Included with the meter on the front panel is an IN/OUT meter selector switch to toggle between the incoming line and the rack system's output. A must for portable racks. SW -- Switched input voltage option. Available with models ET3R and larger. A rugged 3-position, center-off, multi-pole power switch rated for high current applications. Commonly used in portable racks where either 208V or 240V power is furnished for traveling productions. Switch toggles between 208V and 240V to match the balanced power system's input voltage to house power.
  • MSW -- Voltmeter with switched input voltage option. Available with Models ET3R and larger. The same high quality components used in the M and SW options. Provides the greatest convenience and safety for location power situations. Voltmeter turns on as soon as the unit is plugged in accurately indicating the proper input line voltage to reference when switching on the system.
  • T -- Touring "fail-safe" option. Available with models ET5R and larger. May be specified with or without metering and switching options. Rear panels on rack systems are furnished with 30-amp twist-lock outlets for touring power applications. No GFCI outlets are used for additional peace of mind during live performances.
  • OFC -- Oxygen-free copper wiring is used throughout the assembly of the rack system. Hand-made oxygen-free copper wiring jumpers and wiring harnesses are used throughout the assembly process for the purpose of minimizing high frequency current distortion. This method of wiring effectively increases the bandwidth of high-frequency noise attenuation and insures that distortion induced by the use of ordinary wiring materials will be markedly reduced.

Award winning Equi=Tech Wall Cabinet Systems are factory preassembled power distribution centers for hard wiring AC power in a facility -- a complete balanced power system in a wall cabinet. Only minimal installation is required eliminating many expensive hours of labor and electrical parts. All the necessary components such as transformer, breakers, GFCIs, surge protectors and filters are factory assembled and factory prewired using only the highest quality materials and parts.

Wall systems are designed to blanket an entire facility with stably balanced AC power. 5, 7.5, 10 and 12.5 KVA sizes provide 50, 75, 100 or 125 amps respectively -- ideal power capacities for most studios. These systems utilize the same precision toroid isolation transformer as the Equi=Tech rack systems but with greater capacity. Wall systems maintain an extremely clean grounding system regardless of how much equipment is brought in, turned on and used at one time in a facility.

The wall system's components are housed in a sturdy NEMA 12 steel cabinet and feature a rugged industrial-duty AC distribution panel board with commercial grade circuit breakers, transient voltage surge protection and ground fault circuit interrupters. The cabinet itself is gray with a chrome latching handle and an enamel white interior. Wall cabinet systems are approved safe and are ETL listed in compliance with ANSI/UL Std. 1012 for power distribution equipment.
