Introducing... The Juggernaut Twin



The Juggernaut Twin is a two channel 1RU (19" outboard rack unit) class A discrete, transformer switchable, impedance selectable microphone preamp. The Juggernaut Twin is an expanded version of the Juggernaut 500 preamp (please see all the basic details of the Juggernaut 500). If you are already familiar with the Juggernaut 500 read on, if not please take a moment to read about the Juggernaut 500 which has more details about the standard functions and tonal options that we have built upon to create the Juggernaut Twin.

The Juggernaut Twin is the ultimate in microphone preamps, the king of flexibility, the sultan of tone. It has even more features than it's brother, the Juggernaut 500. The new added features have opened up even more possibilities for today's modern engineer. It is THE DESERT ISLAND PREAMP. We've provided more sonic choices than any other preamp on the market. The larger 1RU rack has allowed us to expand upon the design philosophy we established in the Juggernaut 500, which is versatility versatility versatility. With more physical space in the 19" outboard unit compared to the 500 series card format, it allowed us to give the end user more options. No longer will you need multiple preamps in order to get the right sounds for your recordings; you only need one, the only one that can give you the tones and textures of many....the Juggernaut.

The Juggernaut Twin has all the style and flavor as the original Juggernaut 500 preamp plus these cool new additions...
Output transformers can now be switched via pushbutton on the front panel, allowing the user to access all 4 transformer combinations by simply pushing the input and output transformer buttons of your choice.

In addition, we have added dual outputs on balanced XLRs on the back of the Juggernaut Twin, something that can be very useful when recording in the studio or on location. We have also added +4 dbu line level inputs on XLRs, to send in your line level signals to fatten up or color your synths, stereo mixes, or individual tracks.

We've added a FAT switch which uses passive inductors/chokes; this gives you the ability to mellow out the high-mids and gently lift the low end to give that extra low end emphasis on key sources like drums, bass, vocals, etc.

And finally, we have provided the ability use the iron or nickel input transformer in the instrument DI path, you can still choose transformerless DI as well, this is selectable using the new Line to Mic switch via pushbutton on the front panel.

All of these new pushbutton features are incorporated into an intelligent and intuitive interface on the front panel.

Where to Start
Suggested Settings:

American Classic

 - Set your Input transformer selection to Iron and ideally you would be using the Nickel output (The Nickel Output is available seperately as an added option and must be swapped by the user. The Juggernaut ships with a custom Iron core output transformer as standard.) Set the impedance low, between 300 and 2500 ohms. Iron output will work as well, but will have slightly more color than the traditional American Classic preamp we have in mind for these settings.

British Vintage

 - Set your Input transformer selection to Iron, and Iron core output which is standard on all Juggernauts. Set the impedance between 3000 and 6000 ohms. Add +THD and reset your gain to be at least 8 clicks higher to compensate for the pad.

Modern

 - Set your Input transformer selection to Nickel and ideally you would be using the Nickel output (The Nickel Output is available seperately as an added option and must be swapped by the user. The Juggernaut ships with a custom Iron core output transformer as standard.) Set the impedance between 4000 and 10,000 ohms. Iron output will work as well, but will have slightly more color than the Modern Classic preamps we have in mind for these settings.

About the Juggernaut
THE JUGGERNAUT is an all Class A discrete, tranformer coupled 500 series preamp by APA, designed by Tim Farrant and Nathan Eldred.

The Juggernaut features custom wound iron and nickel input transformers (switchable via push button), and comes standard with an iron core custom output transformer (optional custom nickel output is also available). When switching between input transformers the automute function engages to prevent loud pops or damage to speakers. Manual mute is also selectable. Pushbutton LEDs light up when selected. The Juggernaut is electronically discrete and fully class A; no opamps, no chips. Fully API (tm) comptible.

The Juggernaut was designed to be the ideal multi-tasker in the studio for any application. It is the first 500 series preamp that can provide a staggering range of tonal choices and control, through the use of switchable input transformers, widest choice of selectable impedance settings, onboard instrument DI, high-quality detented gain and impedance knobs for repeatability and stereo matching between multiple Juggernauts, and much more. The incredible amount of features packed into a single 500 series slot is unprecedented.

Some other unique features include "Boost" and "+THD". Boost control button lowers or raises the sensitivity of the INPUT to avoid the typical negative -20dB pad found on many preamps which effects the tone. The +THD button is -10dB OUTPUT pad which will allows slight saturation of the transformer.

The Juggernaut has a wide selection of impedance settings ranging from 300 to 10,000 ohms this feature acts like a "tone control" knob; going beyond the traditional idea of mic impedance matching with microphones. The lower settings allow for low end emphasis in the source, while the higher settings allow for a distinctly open and extended full range frequency response. The Juggernaut provides the utmost flexibility and freedom of choice.

    Introducing THE REVOLVER, 2 Slot 500 series rack enclosure; conceptualized by Nathan Eldred, designed by Tim Farrant. The REVOLVER is the first product from APA. The REVOLVER is manufactured and distributed exclusively by APA.

    The Revolver is the ultimate portable self powered 2 module chassis for 500 series API(tm) format. The Revolver can hold two single width 500 series modules, or one double width module with plenty of power to spare. The PSU is grunty and overbuilt so any current or future module is compatible, being 5x's more powerful than the suggested API standard.

    The Revolver can be configured in multiple ways. As a stand alone unit, it sits vertically (perpendicular to the desktop) next to your laptop or on your workstation or rack. It can also be configured horizontially for standard 19" rackmounting. One, two, or three Revolvers can be racked with our optional custom rack kits. A total of up to 6 single modules or 3 double width modules, or combination can be placed in a 19" 2RU configuration.

    The Revolver is constructed from thick powder coated steel, easily able to withstand daily stress and travel. Plenty of ventilation is provided, even for Class A modules. The back of the unit has easy to read screenprinting for ease of use. On/off switch, LED indicators, XLR inputs and outputs, and standard removable IEC cable. The Revolver factory setting can be made to be either 110V or 230V internally.
