AEA RPQ500 - The RPQ 500 Series Module

The RPQ500 module, designed after the successful RPQ preamp, provides the same ultra-clean, high-gain signal path that has earned AEA preamps their great reputation, in a 500 series package. The RPQ500 has been enhanced with additional features, turning it into a workhorse tool for your API 500 compatible rack. The preamp delivers the bandwidth and quietness needed for high resolution recording. JFET circuit topology provides all the dynamics, subwoofer bass, and fast transients that your microphones can record. The input impedance of 10,000 ohms means the RPQ500 will not load down a mic and change its sound. Low Energy Storage™ circuit design instantly recovers from overloads for superior dynamic performance.

The AEA A840

With the A840, AEA introduces the active version of its award-winning R84 microphone. The A840 flatters strings, woodwinds, drums, piano, voice, and much more with the ease and grace that only a Big Ribbon™ mic can deliver.

Now with phantom power, you now have a lot more flexibility in your choice of preamps because you no longer the quiet gain that passive ribbons need so much of. The A840 also shares many of the characteristics of its granddaddy, the A440, but is much more economically priced. Because the A840 shares the same Big Ribbon™ as the rest of AEA's product line you'll acheive a sound with the A840 that is smooth, natural and free of any of the uncomfortable resonances that shorter ribbons and condensers can exhibit. The result is a sound that many engineers say sounds astonishingly close to what your ear hears when you're actually standing in the studio because the R84 doesn't color the sound with a lot of its own characteristics. Because the A840 has significantly less proximity effect than the A440, the A840 makes an excellent spot mic as it is optimized to be positioned within 12" of the sound source without bass distortion.

The A840 makes all of this available in a single package: the signal strength and flexibility of active electronics combined with the luxurious warmth of a Big Ribbon™ all wrapped up in a much more affordable package. No studio is complete without a pair of A840's

The microphone package includes a three meter cloth covered Accusound and an AEA vertical case for proper shipping and storage.

The AEA R92 Large Geometry Ribbon Microphone:

The R92 is intended for amplifier, instrument, and vocal micing applications. Its proximity effect is well-balanced for close-up use. A smooth extended high-end lets instrumental tracks fit well into a mix with little or no EQ. A flexible positioning system and integrated shockmount make the R92 a breeze to setup and use. A captive 2-meter XLR mic cable and a foam lined carrying/storage case is included. Photo courtesy of Primedia (Mix Magazine AES photo).

AEA R88 MK 2 Stereo Ribbon Microphone:

The R88 mk2 is optimized for recording instruments and ensembles in stereo. The R88 uses the large ribbon configuration of the classic RCA 44 series mics, which gives the mic solid 20Hz bass response and a smooth high end which is flattering to complex tones.

The R88 is very useful for chamber music, drum overheads, stereo piano pickup, horn sections, and most any coincident stereo pickup application. The high quality passive electronics in the R88 ensure a huge dynamic range with minimal distortion, but the R88 will sound best with a preamp that has at least 60dB of clean gain, low noise floor (-127dB EIN or better) and input impedance of at least 1.5 kOhm.

The R88 is minimally protected from wind blasts for the most natural sound quality possible, so a pop filter should be used when making close vocal recordings. The R88 may be used for both Blumlein stereo and M-S Stereo recording techniques. The mic is finished in Stealth black to reduce visibility in live recording situations, and features an integral shock suspension to reduce noise coupled through the mic stand.

If you are new to ribbons, you are in for a treat! Experienced users have discovered the R84 is an outstanding general-purpose microphone, ideally suited for solo and accent work. It is hard to find an application where this mic does not shine. It is a fine example of the natural sound and figure-8 directional sensitivity a quality ribbon mic delivers.

  1. Pure natural sound, just as you hear it when you're placing your mic in the studio.
  2. Quick smooth transients that capture the feeling of being there without sounding like a recording.
  3. Extended bass and treble that captures the details without shoving anything in your face.
  4. A figure-eight pattern that focuses your recording on the sound you want.

We believe you will enjoy the confidence this mic inspires. It's a forgiving tool that makes your recording work easier, as it literally sounds good on everything. Try it first and you'll usually like it and find it sits well in the mix. When time is scarce and quality necessary, put the R84 to the test. Our users' experience is that you'll use it more and more (in pairs too!). Then it will start to really grow on you.

AEA R44C Ribbon Microphone
American 1936 Edition

20 years servicing ribbon microphones gained us insight into why good RCA 44s are still in use daily. Les Paul told Wes that the 44 is his favorite microphone. During the 1990s, 44 collectors made it difficult for even recording studios to acquire one. Reborn as the AEA R44, today you'll find engineer/producers such as Bruce Swedien, Kevin Bacon and Shawn Murphy using them around the world. Half the movies scored in Los Angeles now have a 44 somewhere on the scoring stage.

The R44C has the authentic sound , feel, and the look of the RCA 44BX. The R44CX is high output version of the R44C especially designed for scoring and other applications demanding a wide dynamic range with the "classic 44" sound.

Hand-crafted, museum quality, 44 reproduction The authentic sound, look and feel of the 1936-38 RCA 44. A museum quality replica hand made by AEA using 1.8 micron ribbon material originally manufactured by RCA. Black and silver "radio" finish with bright polished chrome grill, yoke and cushion mount. Museum grade version features details such as a bronze investment cast yoke rather than the factory zinc yoke. R44C parts are interchangeable with the original RCA 44B and BX. Supplied with hard wired two meter XLR output cable, shock mount / mic stand adapter, and AEA 44 VC vertical case for proper shipping and storage.
